The Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2011 was our white wine of the month for June 2012 in our online women’s wine club.
SBS blends (yes, that’s really an acronym being used by some wine types) are increasing in popularity of late. And while the French have been blending Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc for centuries, for some reason they’re often patronisingly called a “girly wine” here in Australia.
And that’s fine – if the blokes want to leave the drinking of these blends to us, then we’re happy to oblige! Anyone silly enough to think they’re too superior for an “SBS” will miss out on what is a delightfully classic combination that offers pure drinking pleasure.
So what did Australia’s wine loving women think of this one from Margaret River’s Cape Mentelle?
(The full Tasting Notes & Wine Scoring Card are still available for download too, if you’d like them! Just because we’ve finished tasting this wine as part of our online wine club, doesn’t mean it’s too late for you to try, buy and taste the wine using our fabulous, girl friendly tasting notes to guide you. Enjoy!)
THE VERDICT: The overwhelming response to this wine was a very clear rating of “Why not…” (3/5).
Many women who sent in their scoring cards remarked that it was a good everyday drinking wine, and particularly suited to kicking back and relaxing on a Friday night or sharing over a lovely lunch. But for the price (around $19) they expected a little more “wow” factor. While it wasn’t something they’d sell their children for, it’s certainly a wine they’d more than happily drink again.
Here’s a couple of our favourite comments:
“This is lovely fresh wine that hits the back of the palate very nicely.”
“I’m not normally a fan of these blends but this is very drinkable. I do like it!”
The lunch theme was strong, and we got quite a number of comments similar to this one:
“Tangy and fresh is right! Gorgeous with a light lunch or with nothing else at all.”
Aaah…yes. All true fabulous ladies certainly enjoy a little wine with their lunch, and this Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2011 seems to be an excellent choice. (Actual food, optional!)
And that’s a wrap for the white wine of the month from the online women’s wine club, June 2012!
