What happened at the Melbourne Fabulous Ladies Wine Soiree with De Bortoli

The beautifully appointed upstairs area of the Carlton Wine Room was our private oasis for the Melbourne Fabulous Ladies Wine Soiree with De Bortoli wines on Thursday 11 September 2014.

And what a fabulous night it was! Jay and Paul from The Carlton Wine Room excelled themselves on preparing an immaculately matched menu to suit the gorgeous range of wines our special host Leanne De Bortoli had personally chosen from her family’s Yarra Valley range. We’d have to say that the whole team at the venue were absolutely cracking – some of the best we’ve ever worked with – and the food and wine matches were incredible.

The evening began with the most fabulously retro starter of Prawn Toasts (how could we ever have forgotten how good those tasty little babies can be?!?) matched with the brand new Rococo Premium Cuvee, which punched well above it’s weight for a bubbly in that price range ($21.60) offering a freshness, complexity and length of palate that impressed.

After some time spent greeting old friends and new, we were then seated for the main affair which commence with a delicate entrée of Baked Ricotta, Lemon Verbena and Asparagus matched with the 2014 La Boheme Act Three Pinot Gris & Friends and the 2014 La Boheme Act One Riesling. Both aromatic and deliciously fresh whites.

Next came a Farro (cracked green wheat) Risotto of Bonito and Broad Beans, the savoury, earthiness of which was an absolutely sensational match for the 2013 Yarra Valley Estate Grown Chardonnay.

The chefs at The Carlton Wine Room had insisted that the 2014 La Boheme Pinot Noir Rose demanded a whole dish of it’s own. And so they created the most delicious and intriguing Salsa Verde and Radish Sorbet that, when tasted with the wine, utterly transformed it, drawing out all the fresh and vibrant red fruits, making them explode in the mouth. There was much ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘aaaah-ing’ around the room as everyone tried the wine with and without the sorbet and experienced the amazing effect!

An exquisite Smoked Lamb Rump with Aubergine and Roasted Padro Peppers was then served with the 2012 De Bortoli Dixons Creek Vineyard Section A8 Syrah and the 2012 Riorret The Abbey Vineyard Pinot Noir Yarra. Both wines magically enhancing the dish in different ways.

To finish, The Carlton Wine Room presented another classic reborn – Bread and Butter Pudding. But this one was served cold with an amazing cumquat, lime and yogurt sorbet, proving a beautiful foil to the 2009 De Bortoli Vat 5 Botrytis Semillon (the only non-Yarra wine on the menu!) hailing from the De Bortoli Riverina heartland in Bilbul, and described by Leanne as the ‘baby brother’ to the famous Noble One.

As usual, the volume was turned all the way up to eleven as our fabulous ladies chatted the night away over the exquisite wine and food combinations, stopping in between courses to hear from the lovely Leanne who talked from her heart about the wines and her family’s long history in the wine industry.
