Turkey Flat wins the 2017 Jimmy Watson Trophy with their $30 Grenache

Christie Schulz, owner of Turkey Flat Vineyards in the Barossa Valley

Australia’s most prestigious wine award has been won by one of our favourite wine brands – Turkey Flat! And for the first time ever in the history of the award the wine isn’t a Shiraz, or a Cabernet Sauvignon, or even a Pinot Noir. It’s a Barossa Valley Grenache.

Last night the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the Best Young Red Wine at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2017 was awarded to the Turkey Flat Vineyards 2016 Grenache – which retails for just $30.

To win the Jimmy Watson trophy is no mean feat and first requires the Turkey Flat Grenache to win a high scoring Gold Medal or top place in its own grenache class. It then goes up against other wines which achieved a similar score in 18 other eligible classes of red wines from the 2016 and 2017 vintages at the show.

The fruit for the Turkey Flat 2016 Grenache wine was predominantly sourced from 98 year old Grenache vines grown on the Turkey Flat Vineyard. These old vines produce fantastically concentrated fruit which translates into a style of Grenache for which Turkey Flat has become famous.

We can personally attest to the fabulousness of this wine, which was thoroughly enjoyed here a few weeks ago for International Grenache Day!

Turkey Flat Vineyards is owned and managed by one of this country’s superstar women of wine, Christie Schulz. (Don’t miss reading Christie’s story here.)

The Schulz family have been looking after the vineyards at Turkey Flat for more than 150 years and continue to produce wines made from their individual vineyard estates in their winery on Bethany Road. The wine label ‘Turkey Flat’ and the winery itself were established on the historic family vineyards in 1990.

Sorry Kim, not sure we understand your question! What do you mean ‘provides for your Grenache’? If you give us some more info we’ll try and answer for you. Thanks!

My Italian immigrant father said Grenache was the best style of wine closely followed by Shiraz. I’ll be purchasing a bottle of Turkey Flat Grenache to enjoy at our Christmas ‘tavola’, remembering my Papa.
My favourite wine is a Grenache/Shiraz blend, easy drinking and affordable.
