Trentham Estate Vermentino 2011

Even with a year or two in the bottle, this vivacious Vermentino is ready to tell you a thing or two about how to brighten up a dull, cold winter. Originating from Italy it’s starting to take off here in Australia, and if this example from Trentham Estate on the Murray River of NSW is anything to go by then it’s not hard to see why. Trentham Estate is family winery on the NSW side of the Murray River, 12 kms from Mildura.

The Lowdown

In the sunny fishing villages on the coast of Sardinia, Vermentino is sipped while piles of freshly caught sardines wave their silvery tails on the concrete by the dock. But don’t be mistaken for thinking that this is a big, muscly wine with a distinct odour. The only thing fishy about Vermentino is how well it pairs with seafood.

This wine comes at you like a big bowl of lemons, juice, zest and all, but then there’s something minerally and herbaceous that cuts off the lemon in its tracks, leaving you with a bone dry finish and distinct hankering for some hot, salty chips and a marina view.

Drink With

The classic match is fish, but we also love it with spaghetti pesto or grilled lemon chicken.
