Top 5 faves from the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2014

Did you have a romantic Valentines Day? Flowers, chocolates, a handmade card? Or were you frocked up at dawn, ready to taste hundreds of award winning wines at the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2014 at 8am?

Guess that was just us then. . .

If you haven’t seen our Instagram pics of the day (those ones where we photobombed Australian and visiting international wine ‘royalty’) go have a quick squiz here or here then come back and taste our five favourites from the show. (In no particular order. You shouldn’t be asked to choose between your children, right?!) Click on the wine name to go direct to the producer’s page (if one exists).

2013 Koonara Lucy & Alice Pinot Gris $20

Silver medal0

Named after Dru & Nicole Reschke’s young daughters, this pretty as a picture bottle has luscious pale pink wine inside to match.  Gentle stone fruit flavours of peach and apricot elegantly fill the senses, and there is even a Lucy and Alice jewelry line to go with the wine. Yes, really. A perfect wine to bring along to a girly lunch.

2013 Swings & Roundabouts Chardonnay2013 Swings & Roundabouts Chardonnay $20

Silver medal

Along with the lush, juicy melon taste Margaret River Chardonnay is famed for, this wine also has some surprising floral tones, a teeny bit of oak & some fun, punchy acidity. Wow! A great value Chardonnay with a bit of everything to please.

2013 Montepulciano2013 Brown Brothers Cellar Door Release Montelpuciano $20

The Jones, Steains & Waller Perpetual Trophy (Best ‘other red’ varietal)

Montepulciano is a popular Southern Italian grape that Brown Brothers are trialing in their ‘Kindergarten Winery’. After having this at lunch we think it needs to go into their regular rotation. Fresh & medium bodied with red fruit flavours and a spicy kick, it will go down easy with the classic Italian mid week meals – pizza or spag bol.

2011 Eddystone Point Pinot Noir $26

Silver Medal

A new line from the amazingly talented Bay of Fires team down in Tassie, this spunky newcomer has great clove hits with a smooth-as-stone finish. A fantastic bargain that has picked up a few other awards on the circuit so you’ll spot it sporting the bling on the bottle shop shelf.

2004 Domaine Chandon Prestige Cuvée

Gold Medal

We get to drink a HUGE selection of wines at the Sydney Royal – from the cheapies to the Domain Chandon Prestige Cuvee. This is a very special wine! Superfine bubbles melt away in your mouth, it tastes of pear and brioche and money. Drink on the deck of your yacht. Prices for this baby will range, so if you see it on sale – buy it!!!
