Rutherglen is always the “place to be” on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend (this year it’s June 7 & 8) to taste the latest new release wines across the 19 participating wineries and indulge in the friendly, country fun that is Winery Walkabout!

For just $25 wine lovers will receive their wristband and Winery Walkabout tasting glass that is valid for both days, and then spend the Queen’s Birthday Weekend tasting enjoying the fun at the region’s renowned wineries.

With crisp table wines, warming reds, and world-class muscats on offer, Winery Walkabout is a great way to taste and compare some of the best new wines coming out of Rutherglen.

Team this with fabulous entertainment and live music, back vintage Durif tastings (at Morris Wines), “wake up” winery breakfasts, friendly community events like barrel racing down Main Street in Rutherglen, a fantastic Farmer’s Market showcasing local growers, and the infamous Rutherglen grape stomp, and you have much in store over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend for all ages to enjoy. The excitement of Victoria’s original wine festival is palpable.

A few of the special events over the Festival weekend include the famous Cofield Wines Sparkling Burgundy Breakfasts (Saturday June 7 & Sunday June 8) provided by The Pickled Sisters Cafe, or the laid back recovery Bonfire Breakfast at Lake Moodemere Vineyards (Monday June 9) served with a decadent breakfast and the star attraction – the Lake Moodemere Late Harvest Biancone. Or perhaps for something simpler, simply starting the day at Jones Winery & Vineyard for a Croque Monsieur and locally roasted fresh coffee might be the way to kick start a “walkabout” day.

Winery Walkabout is Victoria’s original wine festival, yet it is gaining in following and momentum each year. It’s fresh, young-at-heart, and just plain fun!

One of the unique features that has grown over the years has been the costumes many choose to wear to add to the festival atmosphere! Some who started coming as much as 25 years ago still return and make the weekend a happy reunion. Many revelers organise groups of friends and chose a costume theme, which is as much fun for the onlookers as those in the group!

New this year is the “Picture Yourself # Winery Walkabout 2014” Competition. Participants will tag themselves or a friend at this year’s event for bragging rights as Rutherglen’s Best Dressed! The Best Dressed winner will receive a case of Rutherglen wine and the top three pictures will be featured on next year’s Winery Walkabout brochure.

Transport is easy over the two weekends thanks to the TAC Winery Shuttle Bus (just $25 per day) which circles between all 19 wineries, and festival-goers can hop on and off as they like in this safe and hassle-free way to tour the wineries. Regional Pick-up and drop-off as well as the local winery service is available for $35 per day. A Designated Driver Reward Campaign, also sponsored by TAC operates all weekend with information available at participating wineries. Attendees can securely check their wine purchases at the main bus marquee and collect it at the end of the day.
