Why we love these wines
Sometimes, one needs to be classy as well as fabulous. And these two wines from Poonawatta are all class. Sure, the brand name is…well…Aussie as. But when you learn that Poonawatta is actually a local indigenous word that means ‘good land’ you can’t help but love it. Because it speaks true. These wines come from seriously good land, and don’t they show it.
Riesling and Shiraz are the hero varieties from the Eden Valley. And it’s not hard to see why. We adore this Riesling, with sunny, bright citrus that leaps from the glass. While this elegant and refined Shiraz will remind you that quality, and paired back layers never go out of style.
Who are Poonawatta?
Fabulous lady of wine, Michelle Holt, is the woman behind Poonawatta. She and her husband Andrew run the business. And while it’s a bit of a mouthful to say, the wine brand takes its name from the historic ‘Poonawatta’ property on which it’s based, in South Australia’s beautiful Eden Valley.
It has just three vineyards covering 9 acres – it doesn’t get much more boutique than that! While the Holt family established some Riesling and Shiraz vineyards in the 1970s and ’80s, the property is famous for having Australia’s seventh old shiraz vineyard. These gnarly old troopers were first planted in the 1880s!

Poonawatta 2017 ‘The Eden’ Riesling
Region: Eden Valley
RRP: $26.00 as at 30/08/17
The Holt family planted two hectares of Riesling back in 1972 – when most people called Riesling ‘Moselle’ and drank it from cardboard casks in the fridge. But the Holt’s were ahead of their time, and from these low yielding and wiry vines they now produce an intensely delicious Riesling that – year after year – is repeatedly praised as one of the best in Australia.
Lovers of zingy citrus will adore it. It’s mouthwatering. And thirst quenching. Both at once. Bursting with lemons, limes and tongue-tingling sherbet. The flavours are bright and vibrant, like the sun hitting the glistening ocean. Grab a striped sun umbrella, a broad rimmed hat, and pop on your floatiest dress, and find yourself a spot to sip this all afternoon long.
As a side note, every single bottle from this small production wine is numbered proudly on the front of the label, so you know exactly just how special the experience of drinking it really is!
Poonawatta 2015 ‘The Four Corners of Eden Valley’ Shiraz
Region: Eden Valley SA
RRP: $35.00 as at 30/08/17
The Holt family sources small parcels of fruit from other local growers to add to their own for this Shiraz as a way of kind of showing just what the ‘Four Corners’ of the Eden Valley wine region can do. Like a wine version of Australia’s Got Talent, they select the most outstanding shiraz from the district where it then has to compete for a spot in the bottle. This is elegant sipping – more an aria than a belting rock anthem. With super bright acidity, juicy red fruits, and a little savouriness on the finish. A perfect partner for a classic dish of pork and fennel sausages with sautéed kale and warm cannellini beans.
