Why we love these wines
Don’t we all love wines that are a little bit spesh? Sure, your Tuesday night spag bol is grateful for anything in the glass beside it. But what about when you’ve got your evening by the fire planned, with a hearty cook-up and and fabulous company? What do you have on hand to serve? We’ve found just the gentlemen callers. Two stunning, earthy, juicy and downright delicious reds from Fergusson Wines in the Yarra Valley who are set to become our go-to men for just these occasions.
Both the wines are named after the sons of the family. Benjamyn is the elder of the two and Jeremy is the younger. Now here’s the part we’re REALLY excited about… They’ll even SIGN the wines this month for you if you like!!! We reckon that just could be the most fabulous part of this whole deal.
Who are Fergusson?
Fergusson Brothers, Peter and Michael, first planted the estate’s Yarra Valley vineyards in 1968. But today, Fergusson is managed by the truly fabulous Louise Fergusson! And her sons – the Benjamyn and Jeremy of this month’s eponymous wines – oversee the growing and wine making processes from the 40+ year old vines.
Not only does Louise run the wine business, but she’s also a graduate of the prestigious La Varrene in Paris. So it’s probably no surprise that Fergusson have an emphasis on classic French varieties, with a full range from sparklings through to a muscat. But this month we’re seeing RED as we take the plunge into two of their reserve range, high end red wines. Because, wine not?

Fergusson ‘Jeremy’ Shiraz Reserve 2013
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria
RRP: $30.00 as at 26/04/17
Okay Shiraz lovers, this is your month. Because Jeremy here is like a great big hug after a long hard day. He’s plumped up the cushions on your favourite wing chair, lit the fire and is now asking you for a detailed, hour-by-hour account of everything that happened. Yes, he’s THAT kind of wine. So sit back and surrender to those luscious fruits of the forest – blackberries, cherries and a little blackcurrant – and allow his elegant stucture, subtle spice and polite tannins to coax it all out of you. Sourced from 40 year old vines, he’s got the experience to soothe and delight all at once. Start in the lounge then enjoy your second glass in the bubbling spa bath by candlelight.
Fergusson ‘Benjamyn’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2013
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria
RRP: $40.00 as at 26/04/17
While all the emphasis these days is on Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, it is actually Cab Sav that is the original red that gave the area its reputation. And it is not hard to see why when you’ve got a glass of this in your hand. The barely there tannins makes it’s silky smooth to sip, and the intense, berry and mocha flavours are like biting into a dark chocolate coated fresh raspberry. Named after the elder of the Fergusson sons, this is one Benjamyn your mum won’t mind you bringing home after the first date. He’s got such good structure and class that she knows he’ll continue to stick around and be a solid contender for at least the next 10 years or more. Serve with a slab of good quality couverture dark chocolate while searching for love online. Also delish with a beef rib roast.
