Why we love these wines

It’s fun knowing about little gems that fly under the radar, right? Well, that’s exactly why we love Jack Rabbit Vineyard (JRV). Head in the opposite direction to where most Melbournians go (the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula), and you’ll find the Bellarine Peninsula — a gorgeous boutique wine region where rolling vines meet the sea — and JRV’s cellar door. What a place! The wines are as divine as the jaw-dropping views across Port Phillip Bay and multi-award winning restaurant. We’re talking about intense and elegant drops with distinctive minerally notes that are a signature of their seaside home. Sound good? Trust us, they are! But don’t tell too many people because they’re a secret you’ll want to keep to yourself.

Who are Jack Rabbit Vineyard?

Founded by Lyndsay and David Sharp, this dynamic duo have been quietly wowing discerning drinkers with JRV since 2010. Today, the winery is a regional epicurean treasure. Now, if you’re going to Google them to find out more, make sure you type ‘Jack Rabbit Vineyard’, not just ‘Jack Rabbit’ into your browser. We searched the latter and unearthed some eye raising results! Lyndsay had no idea when she first named her winery that it would be shared with the world’s best selling sex toy!! When she told us the story, she howled with laughter! And it was this sense of humour, not to mention her humble nature and incredible work ethic, that made us love her. However, while she’s happy to chuckle at herself she takes her wine very seriously. And we can confirm that they’ll too have you *ahem* buzzing with excitement.

Jack Rabbit 2015 Chardonnay

Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Bellarine
RRP: $35.00 as at 28/03/2018

Back in the early noughties, if you heard someone say ‘ABC’ it usually meant they wanted  ‘Anything But Chardonnay’. But this gorgeous drop is the antithesis of the bright yellow, overblown, over-oaked chardy that Monica and Rachel used to sip to sink their sorrows. Instead, it’s bright, classy and chic, with alluring aromas of stone fruit and citrus. And thanks to its cool maritime home and a light touch of French oak during maturation, it’s got a fresh, fine, and perfectly balanced palate.  It’s fair to say that by the end of the event we had with Jack Rabbit Vineyard last year, many stalwart ABC’ers were admitting to becoming total chardonnay converts thanks to THIS wine!

Jack Rabbit 2016 Cabernet Shiraz

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz
Region: Bellarine
RRP: $42.00 as at 28/03/18

Gin and tonic, Romeo and Juliet, Shiraz and Cabernet — some things are meant to be together. Now, while this pairing would be a grape scandal back in their spiritual home of France (because *gasp* they’re from different wine regions), we’re all for it. And that’s because us Aussies don’t get hung up on rules. In fact, we pioneered the cab-shiraz blend and this one is a wonderful example of why. It’s a perfect marriage of succulent fruit, complex characters, and silky, structured tannins that’ll see this good looker get even better with age. But you don’t have to wait. Open it now and you’ll find ripened plums, dark chocolate, pepper, wood spice, hints of leather and lively acidity to keep things fresh. Serve it with your Easter or Sunday roast and you’ll have a match made in heaven. Cheers to love!
