Why we love these wines
Howard Anderson has 47 years of Champagne-method experience behind him, and Christobelle has spent more than one vintage in champagne perfecting the craft. Their sparkling wines are not to be missed, so it’s only right we include one for you to try! Where the bubbly is light and floral, the Petit Verdot, meanwhile, is at the other end of the spectrum. It’s big, bold, inky dark and perfect to pour into a glass when the fire is blazing and something rich and hearty is slow-cooking on the stove. Both these wines are made in very small batches and both using sustainable practices, and yet both are available such a reasonable price. It’s not often we can access artisan brilliance like this. So we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!
Who are Anderson Winery?
This is the father-daughter wine team that you should absolutely know about, and it’s one that wine afficionados already hold close to their hearts (and cellars). Christobelle Anderson and her dad Howard are widely revered for their small batch, high quality wines that you can ONLY buy direct from them and their cellar door. That’s right – they don’t produce high enough quantities to have them for sale anywhere else. So this is a VERY special chance for you to try them this month! They have just 8 hectares of vines, which are not irrigated and the whole operation is almost completely solar powered. In keeping with their gentle and sustainable approach, all their wines use minimal preservatives too.

Anderson Winery 2015 Sparkling Lizzie
Variety: Muscat (early harvest)
Region: Rutherglen, Victoria
RRP: $25.00 as at 25/07/2018
A searingly dry bubbly is far too sharp for a relaxed weekend brunch, but Moscato can often be too sweet. That’s where this stunning Sparkling Lizzie really comes into her own. Named after Christobelle’s great-great grandmother Lizzie (who liked a tipple), she’s made from early harvest muscat grapes, so they still have plenty of acidity. And it’s produced in the traditional champagne method – with the second ferment happening inside the bottle – so she’s far from simple. Delicate floral and fruit flavours are what you’ll find here, with some rose petal and a delicious, zesty freshness. Find a loaf of brioche, a fresh fruit platter, some crispy bacon and get the day started right. Or if evenings are more your thing, watch how this bubbly shines against paté and soft cheeses like camembert. *drool*
Anderson Winery 2011 Petit Verdot
Variety: Petit Verdot
Region: Rutherglen, Victoria
RRP: $21.00 as at 25/07/18
Some may say that a big Cab Shiraz is what you need when the fire is blazing and the outside air is brisk. But nay, it is actually this Petit Verdot that you need to warm your heart and soul. It’s been grown in Australia since the 1800’s but it’s only recently starting to make a name for itself as a wine variety worth searching for, and it thrives in Rutherglen. It’s inky purple-red in colour, with plenty of spice, dark cherry and earthy flavours, and an overarching richness that makes you feel like this wine is wearing 24 carat gold chains around its neck and flashy rings on every finger. It’s opulent, and ‘aint afraid to show it. Let it flash its wares around a hearty beef pie or a slow cooked lamb shoulder.
