Mandala The Matriarch Pinot Noir 2012 Yarra Valley
If there was ever a more perfect wine for Mothers’ Day THIS IS IT. Not only does it have the sassy name, but I freaking love this wine! And I am a mother of three!!! Nuff said.
Okay, so here’s the deal. Mandala Wines are in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, which is pretty much prime Pinot territory. And they do everything small and hand-made. The vines are hand pruned, hand harvested and low yield. They’re practically running an Etsy store.
Mandala do a range of Pinot Noirs, but only in really good years when the happy pills are flowing do they release wines that come just from one single vineyard (i.e. single site wine) – of which this ‘The Matriarch’ is one. So you won’t see her every year.
What I adore about this 2012 vintage is how soft and subtle the strawberry and plum flavours are, and how assured of themselves they seem to be. They don’t need to dominate, they are far too stylish for that. Like those in the front row seats at a fashion show, the fruit flavours sit in front of some warm cinnamon spice, a touch of oak and and a long, lingering finish with a kick of savouriness. Everyone can see the catwalk, but each knows their place in the scheme of things. And it’s all about having total finesse.
Drink it with your mum or any special woman in your life. Preferably with a beautiful roast lunch of pork or duck.
A special bottle for a very special woman – and her children too mwahahahahhaa!! Make sure she doesn’t drink this one alone.
