Why are they so fabulous?
In a nutshell, it’s because of Mr Riggs himself, winemaker extraordinaire Ben Riggs. He’s a guy who knows how to make great vino without any pomp or circumstance.
The winery is positioned at the premium end of the ladder, and it uses Ben’s extensive contacts with growers to cherry pick (so to speak!) fruit from Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale, among other sites.
Mr. Riggs’ winemaking philosophy is to make unpretentious wines that express the essence of the vineyard and the region’s terroir in a style that Ben enjoys drinking; big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance – the latter not necessarily being traits Ben possesses.
Mr. Riggs wines are stamped with Ben’s considerable European experience, as well as his unique vision for wines produced on his hallowed South Australian stomping ground.
Which wines should you try?
There’s so much to lose yourself in here. With multiple incarnations of really great Shiraz, some fantastic Grenache and a cheeky Tempranillo as well as some seriously fabulous Riesling – including one made in the more traditional Germanic style.
At the moment we highly recommend:
2018 J.F.R. McLaren Vale Shiraz
The first wine ever made under the Mr. Riggs moniker, the 2018 vintage has finally been given a name, J.F.R. for Bens late father, John Frederick Riggs, after Ben stumbled across his fathers cufflinks in an initialed box. It has been finessed year on year, the 2018 vintage is the eighteenth release of the McLaren Vale Shiraz. Fruit is selected from three iconic McLaren Vale Vineyards – Gateway Vineyard and Piebald Gully Vineyard, and Martins Vineyard. The combination of the three create an elegant, fine, powerful Shiraz.
