The Brand of Matriarch and Rogue was born out of love. In particular for founder and winemaker Marnie Robert’s, it was for the love of her own Nanna Alice. The core range began as a tribute to her, her sisters and their husbands. 5 couples, 10 wines, all single vineyard and all a reflection of site where the fruit is sourced from.
As the years went on, Marnie came across little parcels of trial varieties planted across South Australia and so the brand expanded to three different ranges to allow her to experiment and create delicious wines from various SA regions that were really showing amazing flavour, structure and the ability to withstand some harsh conditions.
Matriarch & Rogue have a few ranges now and some that are rare, small batch wines and have only just started to grow in Australia.
“I feel honoured to be one of the first to make my interpretation of these varieties” says Marnie. Some of her wines are experimental. Nothing is out of bounds. The champion is the fruit and ensuring that there is no confusion as to what the variety tastes like in the glass when you taste it. The wine MUST taste like the fruit in the vineyard. Minimal interference but maximum attention to detail.
Marnie loves wines that withstand the balance of power and delicacy, texture with finesse, acid with flavour. They are fun. They are flavoursome. They are intriguing and allow you to experience different wines that you would not usually come across. The possibilities are endless so our focus is to make wines that taste balanced and delicious.
Their Clare Valley winery is a small, family run business that has the staff of 4. Marnie, her husband, young son Oscar and their dog, Banjo.
