Levrier by Jo Irvine

Boutique fine wine specialist

Why Are They So Fabulous?

Joanne Irvine is one of the most dynamic, fun loving and fabulous wine makers you will ever meet. Happily declaring that her wine making career started at seven years old, Joanne could be found following her father around wineries, tasting ferments and blending wines. This included Joanne ‘judging’ her dad’s wines, using her unique ‘yuck or yum’ scoring system.

Joanne’s career path saw her become an operating theatre nurse for 20 years, before having a ‘mid life crisis’ in the early 90’s and deciding to follow her true passion for boutique wine making. Joanne’s multi -trophy winning career includes being awarded International Wine Challenge Red Wine Maker of the Year UK 2006, Barossa Wine Maker of the Year 2009 along with being inducted into the Barons of the Barossa wine fraternity for her dedication to wine making excellence.

Joanne believes that attention to detail is what sets her luxurious wine styling apart from many others, beginning with friendships in the local vineyards, exact timing in fruit picking, looking over every batch for aroma development, flavour enhancement, softness and gentle oak influence, across her entire creative process.

Soon after Joanne officially launched Levrier at the Adelaide Zoo in  2017,  James Halliday recognised Levrier as a Five Star Winery and in 2018 listed Levrier as one of The Top Ten New Australian Wineries of the Year for his 2019 Edition Wine Companion.

Joanne is also well known as an advocate for adopted greyhounds, in fact naming her Levrier collection in honour of the majestic Greyhound breed. Having lived with many greyhounds as constant companions in her life, now ‘ditzy’ Daphne and ‘gentle’ Georgie spend almost every day of their year with Joanne at her Barossa Winery. Joanne’s Levrier Wines are all vegan friendly and part proceeds from sales go towards The Greyhound Adoption Program of South Australia.

Which Wines Should I Try?

Mosaic Collection Adelaide Hills Sparkling Meslier Brut Rose:

Arguably the world’s rarest sparkling wine due to such tiny amounts of the Meslier grape variety planted and the fact that Joanne is talented enough to turn this Champagne grape variety into an elegant Australian sparkling wine of soft citrus and green apple finesse, which she created to specifically enjoy with seafood. Splash some on your fresh oysters next time you’re feeling cheeky!

Mosaic Collection Eden Valley ‘Sorter’ Pinot Gris:

A luxuriously textured and full flavoured pinot gris, Joanne has taken this variety and made it her own by “completely blowing the budget” on the finest French oak barrels available, retaining all the plush, juicy nashi pear and white peach flavours for you to explore with food. A must with roasted pumpkin, blue cheese, spinach and pine nut gnocchi.

Mosaic Collection Eden Valley ‘Argos’ Shiraz:

Rich, deep and meaningful, like many of the conversations and relationships formed while falling in love with Joanne’s wine making styles, her Argos Shiraz is matured in the finest French oak for 24 months then gently allowed to mature in bottle for another 24 months, creating the most generous, aromatic and deep flavoured sophisticated shiraz imaginable. Joanne guarantees that her Argos Shiraz will exceed your expectations.

Art Collection Eden Valley Chard-O-yay:

Summed up by the playful label depicting greyhounds on a sunset lit beachfront, Joanne’s Chardonnay is an abundance of the freshest, juiciest, un-oaked expression of crisp, soft stone fruit flavours you will ever splash in your glass. Serve cool under the jetty in summer or with a pizza of smoked salmon, horseradish crème and capers.

Art Collection Barossa Cabernet Franc or Art Collection Barossa Merlot:

Joanne has so many fond memories of creating Luxury Merlots and Cabernet Franc styles with her father Jim, that it would be impossible to complete her Art Collection without expressing her own take on these often mis-treated varieties. There are many family secret techniques developed over decades, that lead to luscious, ripe, full flavoured styles with soft tannins and although Joanne may not reveal any of these secrets in person, you will easily discover the perfect answers in your glass.

Art Collection Barossa Merlot – Cabernet Sauvignon – Cabernet Franc:

The ultimate companionship is formed when Cabernet Franc brings fragrant aromatics and red fruits to the party, Cabernet Sauvignon brings herbal leafy blackberry palate length and Merlot says I’ll bring the soft, rich and juicy mid palate fun to the table. At the recent 2020 launch for the Space Program in South Australia, this was one of the chosen wines enjoyed by our Prime Minister, along with 450 political colleagues and esteemed guests at the official dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre.  It was paired with Murraylands saltbush crusted Lamb rack, pulled shoulder, Limestone Coast potato skordalia, roasted beets, garlic fried beans, pumpkin crisps and Pinot Jus….. Wow!
