Battle of Bosworth and Spring Seed Wine Co make organically grown wines from our family vineyards located in McLaren Vale, South Australia. The vineyards are located just around the corner from historic Willunga (est. 1836), arguably the most attractive township in the region. Our cellar door is in a restored 1850’s chaff shed, with elevated views north over our vineyards and west to the sea.
All of our vineyards are 100% organically grown and certified vineyards by Australian Certified Organic and have been since 1995. Battle of Bosworth has also just been certified as sustainable by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA).
While Joch is a true blue South Australian, Louise landed in Australia on St Valentine’s Day 14th February 1997 from the UK, with a pretty slack track record that included overseas travel, pub work and University study. Initially she worked on her cousin’s vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, but found the bracing morning temperatures during grape picking a bit too reminiscent of home, so moved down to more temperate climes in McLaren Vale to work in the wine industry there.
Night study for a Masters in Marketing at the University of South Australia gave her time to make her early mistakes in wine marketing and sales at various McLaren Vale wineries (Tatachilla Winery, d’Arenberg and Penny’s Hill) during the day.
In 2005 she left paid work and joined Joch at the vineyards in Willunga where between them they started making wine under the Battle of Bosworth label (2001), the Spring Seed Wine Co label (2008) and opened their cellar door in 2011. In 2016 Joch and Louise bought established vineyards on Kangaroo Island and in 2018 released wines under the Springs Road Wine label, and opened a cellar door there.
Joch does wines and vines, Louise does sales and marketing. Between them they developed and nurtured the next generation of Bosworths, Celia (vintage 2004) and Peggy (vintage 2007). Celia begins her winemaking degree in February 2023, bringing hope to Louise and Joch that retirement can’t be too far away.
