All the fabulous details from the Perth Fabulous Ladies Wine Soiree with Whicher Ridge

The city lights of Perth twinkled bright and provided a stunning backdrop for our Perth Fabulous Ladies Wine Soiree with Whicher Ridge on Thursday 18 September at Fraser’s Restaurant.

Situated at the top of King’s Park, our venue provided glorious views of the city and Swan River at sunset as we all milled on the deck to enjoy a glass of 2009 Whicher Ridge Redtail Sparkling Shiraz – a fantastic deep burgundy bubbly, given added perfume and elegance by the inclusion of a little Viognier (12%). Canapes of Air-Dried Beef with Beetroot Zataar and Lamb & Green Olive Crostini provided a great match.

Upon moving inside to be seated for the main meal, the 2012 Frankland River Riesling and 2011 Sauvignon Blanc were poured. Many instantly fell in love with this aromatic and steely Riesling, after initially declaring they weren’t Riesling drinkers! While others appreciated the complexity of the ‘Fume Blanc’ style Sauvignon Blanc. This is a much more elegant and sophisticated expression of this universally popular variety, and it went beautifully with the equally complex flavours of Cured Ocean Trout, Smoked Caviar, Horseradish Cream and King Fish with Finger Lime and Fennel.

Winemaker extraordinaire Cathy Howard was both highly knowledgeable and entertaining as – between courses – she shared with us her love for her wines, and important detail about how she crafted each one, often using gorgeous analogies from her life on the land to describe them.

“This one reminds me of Spit, our sheep we bottle raised,” said Cathy, referring to the Viognier served with the next course. “He’s utterly delightful, and much loved, but doesn’t quite fit in anywhere.”

The 2013 Geographe Viognier and the 2012 Margaret River Chardonnay were both served with a delicious Peking Duck & Spiced Asian Sprout Salad with Ruby Grapefruit. The medium body of both these whites standing up beautifully to the earthy and exotic flavours.

Roast Beef Fillet and Braised Cheek Sauce with Potato and Leek Crumble were a hearty match for two vintages of the Whicher Ridge Frankland River Shiraz – 2008 and 2011. And the room was divided in terms of which was preferred!

Our very own personal cheese platter was a brilliant way to enjoy the two vintages of the exquisite Whicher Ridge Elevation Cabernet, 2009 and 2011. Both deliciously cassis laden and minty, with soft tannins and an overall flavour profile that really spoke authentically of their provenance.
