The Margaret River region of Western Australia is fast gaining a reputation for killer Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends. And while they’re rarely considered to be of the “fine wine” persuasion, I just think that’s wine buffoonery at it’s finest.
No, they’re not for cellaring and pulling out at your great-granddaugher’s 21st birthday party. They’re made for drinking fresh. For drinking now. And that’s exactly the style Cape Mentelle dishes up here. And hey, guess what? Now is when I want to drink it.
Cape Mentelle has ably combined these two much loved varieties into a classic Margaret River blend to produce a well balanced and refreshing wine that has all the forward fruit to make it approachable, but also a lovely savouriness and richness in the mouth that many others lack. But there is no power play here. These two girls have a supportive friendship. Each offers her own strengths without getting carried away – and that’s no easy feat. The tropical, seductive flavours of passionfruit and lime come from the cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, while the depth and mineral finish are provided by the Semillon. Pretty much THE quintessential Margaret River SSB. And at a great price to boot.
She may be from the wild west, but this Margaret River girl is oh-so-urban and is ideal sipped with fresh South East Asian flavours or pretty canapes of all kinds.
