Wave the red flag – Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

With a name like Angus the Bull, this wine almost needs to come with a warning to don a frog suit and goggles so you can wade through the testosterone without drowning.

But don’t be put off. This is a very decent Cab Sav that’s worth putting your overt femininity (temporarily) on hold for.

Each year, winemaker Hamish McDonald sources the best fruit from around south Australia and Victoria to go into the “Bull”. He crafts this wine with the sole purpose of creating the perfect match for a steak.

If it could also talk footy then we’d probably be advising you to run for the hills.

But, scorn aside, it’s precisely because it’s so darned “butch” that we wanted to try Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon. And we’re glad we did.

Grab yourself a bottle and be ready to give in and wave the red flag. Don’t let the boys have all the fun.

The Lowdown

It’s supposed to be a blokey wine. But if we said chocolate, would that clinch it for you? Because this wine is oozing chocolate and vanilla, with a dark smokiness that lingers. It has an intense, deep purple colour and a big hit of fruits of the forest gushes into and fills up your mouth, before that chocolate shows up.

It’s weighty, and there’s a punchy (think “blokey”) finish to this wine from the gutsy tannins, but just remember what this wine is for. To go with steak. When matched with said grilled meat, the whole thing is transformed and the tannins soften to create a very nice food and wine experience indeed.
